Meera Chopra urged Hyderabad Police and Twitter to taken action against the abusers. (Photo: Meera Chopra/Instagram)
Meera Chopra on Tuesday was threatened with rape by Jr NTR fans after the Bollywood actor said she likes Mahesh Babu more than the RRR actor during an #AskMeera session on Twitter.
Meera retweeted some of the messages she received, also drawing Jr NTR’s attention to the rape and death threats by his fans.
Talking about the incident, the actor said, “I conducted an ‘Ask Meera’ session on Twitter, and a fan asked me about my favourite actor from the south film industry. I said Mahesh Babu. Then somebody asked if I liked Junior NTR, and I said I don’t know him, and I am not a fan. That’s it. As soon as I said that, I was bombarded with abuses, murder threats, rape threats, character assassination and threats against my parents. I have got close to 30,000 abusive tweets so far.”
Meera Chopra had tweeted on Tuesday, “@tarak9999 i didnt kno that ill be called a bitch, whore and a pornstar, just bcoz i like @urstrulyMahesh more then you. And your fans will send my parents such wishes. Do u feel successful with such a fan following? And i hope u dont ignore my tweet!!!”
The actor further wrote, “Well i didnt know not being somebody’s fan was a crime.. i want to say this loud to all the girls that if you are not a fan of @tarak9999, u could be raped, murdered, gangraped, ur parents could be killed as tweeted by his fans. They r totally spoiling the name of their idol.”

— meera chopra (@MeerraChopra) June 2, 2020
Hoping for Jr NTR to respond to her tweets and speak up against the indecent behaviour of his fans, Meera Chopra said, “I feel sad for such stars who have such twisted fanbase. Is this what stardom is? I think a star should address such fan clubs and insist that they refrain from such hooliganism. But they don’t do that. Their fans are openly discussing gang rapes and murders and they also use their DPs, but stars just stay quiet.”
Meera also urged Hyderabad Police and Twitter to taken action against the abusers. She posted on Twitter, “@hydcitypolice @CyberCrimeshyd i would like to report all these accounts. They are talking abt gang banging, are abusive and death threatning. Unfortunately they are all @tarak9999 fanclubs. @Twitter i would request you to look into it and suspend these accounts.”
Singer Chinmayi Sripada, who has also been at the receiving end of rape and acid attack threats, came out in support of Meera Chopra and suggested the actor file an official complaint. “One of the reasons I stopped saying I even “like movies” is because there are people who’ll use that as a means to abuse. As someone who gets rape threats everyday, I suggest you file a case. Pick the abusive ones from this and file it with @NCWIndia,” Sripada tweeted.

— meera chopra (@MeerraChopra) June 2, 2020
Determined to take legal action against those who abused her, Meera said, “I am already in talks with the cyber cell team. I’ve always advocated that women should fight for themselves and stand against what’s wrong. You cannot character assassinate a woman, give threats, and abuse her for sharing her choice. I have to raise my voice against such fan clubs. These are the kind of people who go out and commit rapes and murders.”

Later, Meera Chopra thanked her fans for supporting her and urged people to make the cyberspace a safe place for women. She wrote, “Thankyou each one of you for supporting me. Lets make this place safe for women and take down those losers who abuse and give death threats. Lets raise our voice against #womenabuse #rape #pedophilia #hooliganism.

83 actor Ammy Virk: Ranveer Singh looked after us like his own brothers

Written by A. Kameshwari
| New Delhi |

Updated: June 3, 2020 1:30:36 am

Singer-actor Ammy Virk, who recently released his Punjabi track “Main Suneya”, talked about the song, his upcoming film 83 and much more in a Facebook LIVE for The Indian Express handle.
Excerpts from the interaction:
“Main Suneya” is an emotional track. Is there a story behind choosing such a song?
There is nothing personal. I guess the season inspired the song because we have no reason to celebrate at the moment. No parties, no weddings… where will we play the party song? People connect to emotional tracks more. They can listen to it without any reason and at any moment. Hence, we made the song “Main Suneya”. We wanted to make people emotional.
“Main Suneya” tackles a serious issue. What will you say about it?
The message is quite clear in the song. People who do wrong, they receive the results sooner or later.
[embedded content]
Your song “Qismat” became a superhit. After its release, was there a pressure to repeat the success?
Of course, there is a pressure when a song or a film becomes a hit worldwide.
You are making your film debut with 83. How was the experience?
Amazing. It was supposed to release on April 10 but of course, due to coronavirus pandemic, it got rescheduled. Hopefully, things will be better in next two or three months and that’s when we can expect the film’s release. After that I have Qismat 2 for release. I am also working on Bhuj, another Bollywood film.
Have you played cricket in real life?
Yes, I played a lot at a ground in our village. I love the sport.
[embedded content]
Who made you feel the most comfortable on the sets of 83?
Everyone was so good, be it the actors or players or the female leads and even the director Kabir Khan. Ranveer Singh showered us with so much love. He looked after us like his own brothers. Such a positive person he is. We did not feel like we were working on such a big Bollywood film. We all were so comfortable that we knew we can share our opinions and they will hear us out. I am so thankful to all the legends who brought home the World Cup in 1983. I am also thankful to the entire cast and crew of 83. They gave me a lot of love.
Even the experience of working on Ajay (Devgn) starrer Bhuj was nice. I have not yet met him because we shot the film separately, but I know he is an amazing human being.

Deepika Padukone to not oversee 83 post-production

By: Entertainment Desk | New Delhi |

Updated: June 2, 2020 3:01:30 pm

After Reliance Entertainment Group CEO Shibasish Sarkar tested positive for coronavirus, a report suggested that Deepika Padukone will oversee the post-production work of Kabir Khan’s sports drama 83. However, a source close to the makers has refuted the report.
“In times of COVID-19, when all of us should be wishing each other well, a false and insensitive story has been done. Deepika Padukone, as a producer, like all producers of 83, is an integral part of the project. But when a film has a highly able director like Kabir Khan, who is dedicatedly looking into this post-production, where is the need for anyone else to do anything?!” the source shared.
With 83, filmmaker Kabir Khan chronicles the Indian cricket team’s 1983 World Cup victory. Ranveer Singh essays the role of Kapil Dev, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, and Deepika plays his wife Romi Dev. The film also boasts of an ensemble cast including actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu and Jatin Sarna among others.
Earlier, the sports drama was scheduled to release on April 10, 2020, but got postponed indefinitely due to the nationwide lockdown following the spread of coronavirus.
While there were reports of the makers being offered a whopping amount to release 83 on an OTT platform, Shibashish Sarkar told PTI, “There is no truth in this. As producers and even the director, we all are on the same page that we want to wait for theatrical release for the next few months. We will first complete the film then we will wait. If six or nine months down the line the situation becomes much worse we will take a call at that time. There is no hurry. Everybody has shown interest in this project but we are not engaging in any discussion for a straight to digital release currently. We will wait for next four to six months before taking any further call.”

Natkhat: The Vidya Balan short film is compelling

Written by Shubhra Gupta
|

Updated: June 2, 2020 2:06:52 pm

Natkhat’s theme is not new but needs as much iteration as possible.
Where does learning begin? At home.
Natkhat, a 33 minute short, underlines the fact that home is where we learn the values which shape us, and makes us who we are. It is an old-fashioned, nearly-forgotten word– ‘values’, but the most empathetic, and understanding people we know lay emphasis on how they grew up right.
Natkhat is one of the four Indian films selected by MAMI, which is screening at the on-going global film festival, ‘We Are One’ (4.30, IST, June 2), and is a valuable addition to the films which call out patriarchy, and how utterly damaging it can be.
A story framed within a story is the device the film uses, as it shows us a little boy going about his days, at school and at home, his sharp eyes and alive mind observing and emulating those around him, and how what is labelled as harmless mischief (‘natkhat’) can quickly roll over into horrifying bullying and worse.
Having witnessed a bunch of older teenagers indulge in dubious activities, and participated in a disturbing encounter engineered by some boys in his class, our little fellow skips home, into the loving, cleansing embrace of his mother, played by Vidya Balan.
The actor, who’s turned producer with the film, is the moral centre of her son’s universe, as he is shown taking in the chat at the family dining table (Balan, the ghoonghat-clad wife and daughter-in-law serving her husband, younger brother in law, and father in law, attentive to each frown and comment) as the men talk casually about ‘dealing with’ pesky, independent women. This ‘boys will be boys’ indulgence is where it all starts, whether it is pulling a little girl’s plait, or, a few years later, beating your wife.
Balan’s bahu’s bruises are a story in themselves, and are strong reminders of how forcibly gendered our childhood can be, how misogyny is not just a male preserve (the mother-in-law is silent and complicit, perhaps perpetuating her own treatment, and ensuring that the cycle of domestic violence stays unbroken) and how a corrective can be put into place. The story within a story device is distracting, though: the film’s strength resides in the mother-and-son, the core which quivers with each blow, and settles with a soothing touch.
Natkhat’s theme is not new but needs as much iteration as possible. And the treatment, by director Shaan Vyas (his striking debut production Kshay, which was directed by Karan Gour, has stayed with me), makes it powerful. It deserves a full-fledged film. I’m curious about how Balan’s character found her own strength, and how that little boy turns out.

Shah Rukh Khan and his Meer Foundation have come forward to help the toddler.
Last week, a clip of a toddler at Muzaffarpur railway station in Bihar tugging at a piece of cloth covering his dead mother, went viral. The video left many distressed about the state of the migrant workers in the country amid the coronavirus outbreak. Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation also took notice of the video and decided to help the toddler who lost his mother.
“#MeerFoundation is thankful to all who helped us reach this child, whose heart wrenching video of trying to wake his mother disturbed all. We are now supporting him and he is under his grandfather’s care,” the foundation shared on Twitter along with a photo of the toddler with his family.
Extending his support to the little one, Shah Rukh Khan tweeted, “Thank you all for getting us in touch with the little one. We all pray he finds strength to deal with the most unfortunate loss of a parent. I know how it feels…Our love and support is with you baby.”

Shah Rukh had earlier contributed towards various relief funds, and pledged financial support for daily wage workers across the country. His IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders and Meer Foundation collaborated with the West Bengal and Maharashtra governments to provide 50,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to healthcare providers.
In a statement, he emphasised on how we should be there for each other in these difficult times, and said, “This is a moment for all of us to come together in a collective effort to make each other kinder, stronger and braver to face the days ahead. This crisis is not going to pass in a hurry, it will take its time and its toll on all of us. It will also show us that there isn’t really a choice between looking out for ourselves and looking out for one another. There’s nothing more obvious in the spread of this pandemic, than the fact that each one of us is inextricably connected to each other, without any distinction. Together, we will overcome.”
