Revisiting Sushant Singh Rajput starrer MS Dhoni The Untold Story

Sushant Singh Rajput starrer MS Dhoni The Untold Story released in 2016.
Back in 2016, I remember thinking why were they making a film on cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni when his career was far from over? Four years later, I realise that it was probably for the best because had they not made the movie, we would have probably missed the chance of seeing one of Sushant Singh Rajput’s best performances.
Directed by Neeraj Pandey, MS Dhoni The Untold Story was a biopic that followed the cricketer’s story right from his childhood in Ranchi till the point he hit that memorable shot which led to India’s 2011 World Cup win. The historic moment is still ingrained in every Indian’s mind, so, in the film, it had to be spot on, and with Sushant’s laser focus, it was spectacular to watch.

The film had a linear storytelling structure. We saw Dhoni’s childhood, his early days in cricket, his family life, his days as a ticket collector and how, through it all, his passion for cricket never ceased. While as a film, this cannot be called a great biopic, mainly due to its pacing issues, Pandey certainly encapsulated the film’s spirit by casting the right actor for the job.
I remember stepping out of the theater and not being impressed by the film’s duration, which was a little over three hours. I also did not appreciate how the makers chose to sidestep all the controversies from MS Dhoni’s life, that were very much in the public eye. Yet, what moved me was the perseverance that was visible in Sushant Singh Rajput’s mannerisms through the film. I won’t lie and say that I loved every movie of the late actor, but he was certainly one of those who left a mark after you saw him on the silver screen. And the same holds true for MS Dhoni The Untold Story.
The film also starred Disha Patani and Kiara Advani. Disha’s character was given an ominous tone right from the start, and Kiara’s character felt like it was added because it was an essential part of Dhoni’s real life. Compared to this, his early days with Anupam Kher, who played his father, and Bhumika Chawla, who played his ever-supportive sister, spoke more about the central character. Even his storyline with Kranti Prakash Jha’s Santosh Lal had more of an emotional impact.

There were numerous stories about Sushant Singh Rajput being rigorous while he was learning the game, which boasts of unique batting and bowling styles. Yet, he managed to perfect Dhoni’s style and present a story that, in hindsight, was told at the right time.

Dil Bechara trailer: Sushant and Sanjana promise a heartwarming tale

Written by Mimansa Shekhar
| New Delhi |

Updated: July 6, 2020 6:17:45 pm

Dil Bechara is Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film.
The trailer of Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi’s much-awaited film Dil Bechara is out, and it promises to take viewers on an emotional journey, involving two hopelessly in love youngsters. Dil Bechara, which was previously titled Kizie Aur Manny, marks the directorial debut of casting director Mukesh Chhabra. It will premiere on Disney Plus Hotstar on July 24.
Dil Bechara revolves around Kizie, suffering from cancer, and a cancer survivor Manny, who meet at a support group. The trailer, at the outset, hints that this isn’t going to be a regular love story. Kizie is a nerd who has accepted her short life, expecting little adventure, but that’s only till she meets Manny, a flamboyant guy who is everything Kizie would want in her mundane life. Cupid strikes, and Kizie begins to dream the impossible. Soon reality comes calling, but her efforts to keep away from Manny go in vain. They are inseparable now.
The trailer’s high point is how Sushant Singh Rajput gets into the skin of Manny who is charming, funny and caring. His efforts to woo Kizie are some of the most adorable moments here. From ensuring she laughs her heart out to making her heart beat faster in love, Manny tries to fulfil everything Kizie wants before their love story ends. Even if it means accompanying her to the hospital or taking her to Paris.
[embedded content]
Sanjana Sanghi, who makes her debut as a lead, looks promising. The other high point is the film’s music by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman. It is youthful and something to watch out for.
Dil Bechara is the official Hindi adaptation of John Green’s 2012 bestseller The Fault In Our Stars. The Hollywood film with the same name was helmed by Josh Boone, and starred Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. It received worldwide recognition for showcasing a sensitive and unique love story. Writer John Green had earlier said he found it amazing that his piece of work was being made into a film in India.
Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi starrer Dil Bechara is helmed by Mukesh Chhabra.
Dil Bechara, which was shot in the summer of 2018, also stars Swastika Mukherjee, Javed Jaffrey, Milind Gunaji and Sahil Vaid, and features Saif Ali Khan in a cameo. It is being presented by Fox Star Studios.
The fact that Dil Bechara would the last time that audiences will get to watch late actor Sushant Singh Rajput on screen is leaving fans excited, yet heartbroken.

It will follow both, the global and the Indian timeline, of how the virus spread and will shine light on important developments that have taken place ever since country’s first coronavirus victim was detected in Kerala in January.
Shot extensively during the period of lockdown, the documentary tells the story through interviews with subject matter experts, front line workers, patients, migrant workers, and others working tirelessly behind the scenes to arrest the spread of this deadly disease.

“This is an important story and needs to be told in an impactful manner. I am proud to be part of this monumental project and target to bring all my experience into play for the narration in Hindi language,” the actor added.
Gautham Vasudev Menon said working on the documentary felt familiar as the pandemic has affected everyone.
“It is a valiant effort. I could not have asked for a better debut as a narrator, especially in my mother tongue Tamil, and coincidentally this marks my first documentary ever. I urge everyone to watch it along with your family,” he said.
The documentary, also available in English, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali, will drop exclusively on the Discovery Plus app on July 16.

Akshay Kumar said it was important for the film industry to resume work and gear up again to entertain the audience.

“Let NOT make it about the size of the screen we get to watch this labour of love on, his last, and in my humble belief, his finest. Let’s instead make it about the size of our hearts, that we can make as big as we wish to, and fill up with as much love, joy and pride as we want,” she added.
Sanjana Sanghi further wrote that the world should cherish, relish and celebrate Dil Bechara in every way. She wrote that in these moments of despair, the film receiving love would act as the much needed joy in their lives. The actor wrote, “Socha agar moral support hee dena hai, toh shayad #DilBecharaOnAnyScreen ki thaan lo? ✅ Aur #DilBecharaOnBigScreen ko abhi ke liye, bhool jao? Aur jahan rahi intezaar karne ki baat. Intezaar toh mahino se kar rahe hain, taqleefon se guzar rahe hain. Ab film dekhne ka time, aur yaadon mein beh jaane ka time, aa gaya hai. Itna pyaar hai aapke paas dene ke liye, bas unconditionally de do? Dukh bahut zyaada hai, thodi si khushi ka mauka hee de do na.”
